About Asbestos Cancer - Mesothelioma - Lung Cancer
A common form of magnesium silicate which was used in various construction products due to it's stability and resistance to fire.

Asbestos exposure by inhaling loose asbestos fibers is associated with various forms of lung disease.

It has been proven through the production of company documents and testimony given in prior lawsuits that the large manufacturers of asbestos containing products and silica were well aware of the dangerous health consequences by 1930. It was proven that some of these manufacturers actively conspired to keep these hazards secret.

EPA estimates that asbestos-containing material was used in the construction of some 750,000 public and commercial buildings in the United States.

Asbestos is a known human carcinogen which can cause lung cancer, mesothelioma, and asbestosis when airborne fibers of the substance are inhaled. Because of this, many building owners have undertaken abatement projects to reduce asbestos exposure in their buildings.

CAUSES
The asbestos fibers enter the body while breathing and when the fibers reach the lungs it can cause scarring of the lungs which is called asbestosis, fortunately, Asbestosis is non cancerous.

Mesothelioma or tumor growth will only show symptoms after about 30 years from exposure.

As is the case of many ailments the more intense the exposure of the carcinogen, in this case asbestos, the greater the risk of suffering from mesothelioma.

Even those who worked in asbestos factories for just a short period of time have been affected by mesothelioma years later.

Family members of people working in asbestos plants are also at high risk of getting mesothelioma as they were exposed to the workers' clothing, skin or hair follicles

MESOTHELIOMA SYMPTOMS
The early symptoms of mesothelioma are generally non-specific, and may lead to a delay in diagnosis. Sometimes resembling viral pneumonia, pleural mesothelioma patients may present with shortness of breath, chest pain and/or persistent cough; some patients show no symptoms at all.

A chest x-ray may show a build-up of fluid or pleural effusion.

The right lung is affected 60% of the time, with involvement of both lungs being seen in approximately 5% of patients at the time of diagnosis.

Less common symptoms of pleural mesothelioma include fever, night sweats and weight loss. Symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma may include pain or swelling in the abdomen due to a build-up of fluid, nausea, weight loss, bowel obstruction, anemia or swelling of the feet.

MESOTHELIOMA  CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT
Workers compensation laws were passed at the request of the insurance companies and their insureds like Johns-Manville to protect them from being sued by their employees for diseases such as silicosis or asbestosis.

By the late 1930's, many states' workman's compensation laws compensated individuals for asbestos disease.

The first known asbestos lawsuits were filed in 1929 in New Jersey. Libby class action lawsuit, 321,000 tons of ore shipped throughout the Bay Area that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency now says was laced with dangerous levels of cancer-causing asbestos. It came from a mine in Libby, Mont., where one in seven residents in the surrounding valley have lungs permanently scarred from asbestos. It ended here, as attic insulation in homes throughout the East Bay, as fire-proof coating on San Francisco high-rises and as soil additive in nurseries and gardens everywhere
